JAIPUR SIGHT SEEING

OLD CITY ( PINK CITY)
The old city is partially encircled by a crenellated wall – major gates are Chandpol, Ajmer and Sanganeri.
The city is noteable for its town planning: avenues divide the Pink City into neat rectangles, each of which specializes in certain crafts. At the sunset – shaded buildings have a magical glow.
The main bazaars in the old city include  Johari Bazaar, Tripolia Bazaar, Bapu Bazaar and Chandpol Bazaar.
A landmark in this part of town is the Iswari Minar Swarga Sal near Tripolia Gate. You can climb to the top for excellent views over the old city.

HAWA MAHAL
The extraordinary, fairy – tale, Pink – sandstone, delicate honeycombed hive of Hawa Mahal is jaipur’s most distinctive landmark. The five storey building was constructed in 1799, and is an amazing example of Rajput artistry, built to enable ladies of the royal household to watch the life and processions of the city.
It’s still a great place for people – watching from behind the small broken shutters, patterned by light. The top offers stunning views over the Jantar Mnatar and the City Palace one way, and over the Siredeori Bazaar the other. The Palace was built by Maharaja Sawaj Pratap Singh and is part of the City Palace Complex.

CITY PALACE
This Palace occupies a large area – a complex of courtyards, gardens and buildings. The outer wall was built by Jai Singh, but other additions are much more recent some dating from the early 20th century. Today the Palace is a blend of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture. There are two entranaces : the one through Virendra Pol, and other through Udai Pol near Jaleb chowk.
Entering through Virendra Pol, you’ll see the Mubarak Mahal a reception centre for visiting dignitaries, cooked into Islamic, Rajput andEuropean stylistic stew in the late 19th century by Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh ΙΙ. It now forms the part of the Maharaja Sawai Mansingh ΙΙ Museum, containing a collection of royal costumes and  Superb shawls, including Kashmiri Pashmina
.

JANTAR MANTAR
Near the City Palace is Jantar Mantar, an observatory begun by Jai Singh in1728, which at first glance looks like a collection of mammoth, bizarre sculptures. If sensing you’ve stepped into Alice Through The Looking Glass is not enough then Rs150 guide fee is worthwhile. Guides provide fascinating explanation of how each of the instruments work, and how through watching, recording and meticulous calculation , Jai Singh measured time by sun’s shadow falling on the huge sundials and charted its annual progress through the zodiac.
Before constructing the observatory he sent scholars abroad to study foreign constructs. He built 5 in total andthis is the largest and the most preserved. Others are in Delhi, Varanasi and Ujjan. The 5, the Muttra observatory, is gone.

CENTRAL MUSEUM
This dusty but impressive collection is housed in the spectacularly florid Albert Hall, south of the old city, and displays affine, if dustily exhibited, array of tribal ware, decorative arts, costumes, drawings and musical instruments. Photography is prohibited.

NAHARGARH
Built in1734 and extended in 1868, sturdy Nahargarh overlooks the city from a sheer ridge to the north. An 8km road runs up through the hills from jaipur, or the fort can be reached along a zigzagging 2km footpath. There are some interesting furnished rooms and glorious views it’s a great sunset spot.

ROYAL GAITOR
The royal cenotaphs, just outside the city walls, are an appropriatetly restfull place to visit and feel remarkably undiscovered. Surrounded by a straggling village, the monuments bear much beautiful, intricate carving. The marble cenotaph of maharaja Jai Singh ΙΙ   is particularly impressive.

Nearby is the Jal Mahal, in the middle of asparkling but stinking lake and reached by a causeway. The palace is pitched to join the ranks of Rajasthan’s palatial hotels, but at present belongs to the military.
